Sharron Angle may ride Nevada primary back to Prohibition

As Nevada Democrat Harry Reid waits for the GOP challenge from primary winner Sharron Angle, the people of the state may wonder exactly what they’ll be getting if Angle wins. her views on the issues place her squarely on the fringe, instead of at the heart of Republican values. The Los Angeles Times reports the former schoolteacher and member of the Church of Scientology first wants to get rid of Social Security for the youthful employed. That is only somewhat controversial, however, considering that Social Security is likely on its last legs. Where it gets interesting with Sharron Angle is when one delves into her opinions regarding education, prohibition and amenities enjoyed by prison inmates.

Sharron Angle would love to see the Department of Education disband

Sharron Angle proclaims in her campaign website that the Department of Education should disband because she claims it is unconstitutional. She points to failed one-size-fits-all programs like No Child Left behind that have allegedly overburdened classrooms and overburdened teachers with excessive testing and regulations. Pursuing choice options for education, from chartered schools to instant cash loans vouchers or home schooling, are better according to Ms. Angle.

Back with a temperance

. A 2006 interview for the now defunct magazine Liberty Watch is most noteworthy, reports Slash Politics, for Angle’s call for alcohol to be treated in much the same way as marijuana in the U.S. That would make alcohol as illegal as it was during Prohibition. This is particularly odd, considering that Sharron Angle is running out of Nevada, the land of Las Vegas. Angle spokesman Jerry Stacy tried to cover up the damage she did with her statement, but it still hasn’t gone away.

Disturbed convicts can be given massages

Also on the odd side, Sharron Angle has spoken out numerous times against the use of psychiatric drugs, in concert with her Scientologist beliefs. She has tried to “gain support for a prison drug rehabilitation program that would involve prisoners quitting drugs cold turkey, with saunas and massages as part of treatment,” reports Talking Points Memo. Apparently this doctrine comes straight from L. Ron Hubbard’s writings, and Sharron Angle counts herself a believer.
