As Nevada Democrat Harry Reid waits for the GOP challenge from primary winner Sharron Angle, the people of the state may wonder exactly what they’ll be getting if Angle wins. her views on the issues place her squarely on the fringe, rather than at the heart of Republican values. The Los Angeles Times reports that the former schoolteacher and member of the Church of Scientology first wants to get rid of Social Security for the youthful employed. The level of controversy in this case is relatively low here, in light of the overall state of Social Security. What raises the hairs on the back of right-wing Republican necks are Sharron Angle’s opinions about education, prohibition and spas for prison inmates.
Sharron Angle would love to see the Department of Education disband
Sharron Angle proclaims in her campaign website the Department of Education should disband because she claims it is unconstitutional. Failed programs like No Child Left Behind and numerous others only serve to complicate life for teachers and students, she claims. Alternative choices for education, whether they be home schooling, emergency money vouchers or charter school opportunities, are better for children, teachers and families, suggests Angle.
Back with a temperance
Sharron Angle’s stance on alcohol is possibly the one view that could cause her the most trouble in her battle against Harry Reid in Nevada. Alcohol, said Angle in a 2006 interview for Liberty Watch, should be dealt with by police force and also the legal system much within the same way as marijuana, reports Slash Politics. That would make alcohol as illegal as it was during Prohibition. This is particularly odd, considering that Sharron Angle is running out of Nevada, the land of Las Vegas. Jerry Stacy, spokesman for Sharron Angle, is still trying to spin that one away.
There can be hot tubs for the mentally ill
As a Scientologist, Sharron Angle does not support the use of psychiatric drugs. According to Talking Points Memo, Angle tried to “gain support for a prison drug rehabilitation program that would involve prisoners quitting drugs cold turkey, with saunas and massages as part of treatment”. This comes straight from Church of Scientology beliefs, and Sharron Angle has reportedly supported the notion on multiple occasions.
