Nap Nanny sleepers recalled after death

First generation Nap Nanny products have been recalled by Baby Matters and the Consumer Product Safety Commission. One five-month-old died using a Nap Nanny, though it was getting used incorrectly. If you have a first generation Nap Nanny, the business is offering $ 80 off the purchase of a new product.

The Nap Nanny product

A foam pillow intended to help fussy babies sleep, the Nap Nanny is made and distributed by the Baby Matters company. Intended to re-create the position of a auto seat, the Nap Nanny has a three-point harness. When the harness is used incorrectly, it doesn’t hold the baby in place. First-generation Nap Nanny products don’t have a D-ring to hold the Velcro harnesses in place. Only the first generation products are integrated within the recall.

What you need to do about the Nap Nanny recall

If you have a Nap Nanny, your response to the recall depends on the generation of the products. Between January 2009 and July 2010, the Nap Nanny first generation product was sold in numerous stores. Call Baby Matters at 888-240-4282 to get a coupon that will give you $ 80 off a new Nap Nanny. Before you use a Nap Nanny that does have D-rings, you should watch the video on the Baby Matters website.

Consumer Product Safety Commission under fire

A long line of baby product recalls this year contains this Nap Nanny. In the last year, the CPSC has recalled pacifiers, drop-side cribs, toys, booster seats, cradles and more. Congress passed a law in 2008 requiring that the CPSC create baby gear standards. The CPSC has set standards for baby walkers and bath seats. There are forthcoming standards for cribs, and you will find plans for other products. The CPSC has not much staff or funding, but lots of responsibility.
