Nap Nanny sleepers recalled after death

First generation Nap Nanny products have been recalled by Baby Matters and the Consumer Product Safety Commission. One five-month-old died using a Nap Nanny, though it was getting used incorrectly. Anybody who has a first generation Nap Nanny can get $80 off the purchase of a second generation product.

What the Nap Nanny is used for

The Baby Matters Nap Nanny is a foam product intended to help restless and fussy babies sleep. Intended to re-create the position of a automobile seat, the Nap Nanny has a three-point harness. The harness is what is at issue in this recall — when used incorrectly, the harness does not hold the baby in place. First-generation Nap Nanny products don’t have a D-ring to hold the Velcro harnesses in place. Only those without the D-ring are included within the recall.

How you need to react to the Nap Nanny recall

Which product you have requires your reaction to the Nap Nanny recall. The first-generation Nap Nanny products were sold between January 2009 and July 2010. Call the Baby Matters company at 888-240-4282 to get a coupon for $ 80 (about 61 percent of the purchase price) off a new Nap Nanny. Before you use a Nap Nanny that does have D-rings, you should watch the video on the Baby Matters website.

Questions about the Consumer Product Safety Commission

The Nap Nanny recall is just probably the most recent in a huge number of baby product recalls. The CPSC has recalled a huge variety of products within the last year, including pacifiers and drop-side cribs. Congress passed a law in 2008 requiring that the CPSC create baby gear standards. Creating standards has been a long process, and only baby walkers and bath seats have complete standards. There are forthcoming standards for cribs, and there are plans for other products. Despite the huge responsibility of the safety of most products, the CPSC has little funding or staffing.
