$ 298 million paid by Barclays Bank because of sanctions violations

The United States gets to do whatever it wants in the world. The U.S. also had a considerable amount of say when it came to charges against England’s Barclays Bank because that U.S. has quite a bit of financial control world as well. As outlined by the Washington Post, Barclays was accused by prosecutors to have violated for more than a decade, from March 1995 to September 2006, all of the U.S. sanctions against Cuba, Iran, Libya, Burma and Sudan. The New York branch cleared through Barclays over $ 500 million that went to all of the nations that are enemies to the U.S.. Barclays essentially admitted to the crime considering a settlement for the criminal charges was agreed to for $ 298 million, reports Reuters.

Barclays attempted to conceal the transactions, say prosecutors

All of the documents searched through with Barclays didn’t have names from the other countries. To make the connection to the other countries obscure, payments went through internal accounts. Barclays is in all this trouble because they traded with the enemy and violated the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, as outlined by chief of the U.S. Justice Department’s asset forfeiture and money-laundering division, Jennifer Calvery.

The U.S. sanctions against countries began for Sudan and Burma in 1997, Iran in 1995, Libya in 1986 and Cuba has had it since Kennedy.

Barclays discloses a couple of transactions

Barclays Bank decided it was better to just cooperate and give U.S. government investigators all the documents related to the case. Barclays hasn’t given all these documents up yet. The $ 298 million settlement breaks down into $ 149 million up front to the U.S. government and an additional $ 149 million via a deferred agreement to be distributed at a later time.

Violating human right like Americans

The past has shown Cuba, Iran, Libya, Sudan and Burma all having human rights violations against them in history. Supporting U.S. enemies through U.S. soul was a bad move for Barclays, although Barclays isn’t really the only one who has made this mistake. The United States will fight to enforce its right-of-way. It is said by The Decemberists’ song “Sixteen Military Wives”,

Cheer them on to their rivals
Cause America can, and America can’t say no
And America does, if America says it’s so
It’s so!
