The United States gets to do whatever it wants in the world. The U.S. also had a considerable amount of say when it came to charges against England’s Barclays Bank because that U.S. has quite a bit of financial control world as well. Sanctions were made from the U.S. to Cuba, Iran, Libya, Sudan and Burma which were allegedly broken by Barclays between March 1995 and September 2006, reports the Washington Post. The New York branch cleared through Barclays over $ 500 million that went to all of the nations that are enemies to the U.S.. As outlined by Reuters, a $ 298 million settlement to U.S. criminal charges was agreed to be paid by Barclays Bank already because this happened.
Prosecutors believe Barclays was trying to conceal the truth
All of the documents searched through with Barclays didn’t have names from the other countries. An internal account was used for all of the payments made because the bank didn’t want to be connected to the other countries. Counts against Barclays Bank include violation of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and trading with the enemy, according to Jennifer Calvery, chief of the U.S. Justice Department’s asset forfeiture and money-laundering division.
U.S. sanctions against Cuba have been in existence since the Kennedy presidential administration, when Libya (1986), Iran (1995), Sudan and Burma (1997) came later.
Some Barclays transactions disclosed
Reuters reports that Barclays Bank has agreed to cooperate by providing all related documents to U.S. government investigators. Barclays hasn’t given all these documents up yet. The settlement of $ 289 million is split into two payments of $ 149 million which can be distributed right away and then later.
Human rights violations and the American way
Cuba, Iran, Libya, Sudan and Burma all have had human right violations against them within the past. Barclays isn’t really the only company making the mistake of going through U.S. soil to give U.S. enemies support and money. Making things happen their way is what the United States is known for. It is said by The Decemberists’ song “Sixteen Military Wives”,
Cheer them on to their rivals
Cause America can, and America can’t say no
And America does, if America says it’s so
It’s so!
